A "Significant" Mutation In The Monkeypox Virus Has Infected Three Persons, The Agency Says

- Spread within multiple subpopulations or a larger subpopulation
- Huge community transmission

California infected with monkeypox
California officials said Thursday that health authorities are currently investigating the role that monkeypox may have played in the death of a person infected with the virus. He is the second known person to die in the United States after contracting the virus during the current outbreak.
The announcement comes less than a month after officials in Texas confirmed they were investigating a possible death from the virus.
California has recorded 4,140 cases of monkeypox, more than any other state in the country
Authorities believe that the vaccination drive has reduced the number of new cases being reported of monkeypox. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention predicted in a technical analysis published last week that the outbreak in the United States will spread "very slowly" over the course of the next month, "perhaps at a reduced pace of expansion."
However, the agency also admitted that it had "low confidence" in the assessment. The CDC notes that some states are now beginning to see an "acceleration" in virus outbreaks.
The new phase of the outbreak also saw a change of leadership at the CDC, which recently appointed the chief of the National Center for HIV, Hepatitis, Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Tuberculosis Prevention (NCHHSTP) to lead the response.

The agency also recently revised its guidance on monkeypox, removing a line stating that monkeypox did not meet the textbook definition of an STD.
"Monkeypox is often transmitted by close and persistent physical contact, associated almost exclusively with sexual contact in the current outbreak," the CDC says in its new recommendations.

The ranks of the agency working on monkeypox have also swelled in recent months amid the growing complexity of the outbreak.

In other words, there is a hint, or almost confirmation, of a mutation in monkeypox, but it has not yet been confirmed.
This serves as a warning of a possible mutation or the emergence of a new mutation, which explains the many infections and the high incidence in California.
Although scientists believe the mutation is still rare, the change prompted the agency to issue a warning to labs, urging them to update their tests to guard against missed cases.
The warning came just weeks after the agency urged some labs to recheck some results for "false positives" detected in women and children who were incorrectly diagnosed with the virus.
